I have been as Jacob, O God!
Having wrestled once upon a time
With the living God, and halting
      in my spirit as I go on,
Certain that I once had a fearful confrontation.

As Jacob, O God, going back to Bethel, I go
To meet El of Beth-El
     Whom I had once met before,
Whom I tremble to meet again;
He says “Put away the foreign gods from your house
And the living God shall be your protection round about.”
A change of garments and a change of heart.
A circumcision of the inner part to hear
And to fear the God of Bethel.
To return to the God of the house-of-God.
